Houston, Texas: Innovation gets personal as the world's biggest sportswear firm Nike unveiled its first shoe that ties itself and will go on sale at the end of 2016.

Sports lovers are in for an amazing and innovative self-lacing sneakers this holiday season with the HyperAdapt 1.0, confirmed the US sportswear giant at its 'Innovation 2016' event yesterday.

The self-lacing shoes have been designed by legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield and Tiffany Beers, Nike's senior innovator, who's worked on the Nike Air Mag and Nike Air Yeezy.

According to Tiffany Beers, the laces tighten when your feet hit a sensor built into the shoe. There are two buttons on the side to loosen and tighten them for the perfect fit.
"We've entered a new era of personalised performance," said Mark Parker, Nike's president and CEO. "Today, athletes want more than just a dash board. They want a relationship."

HyperAdapt 1.0 is the first performance vehicle for Nike's latest platform breakthrough - adaptive lacing. The shoe translates deep research in digital, electrical and mechanical engineering into a product designed for movement.

It challenges traditional understanding of fit, proposing an ultimate solution to individual idiosyncrasies in lacing and tension preference.

Beers was tasked with figuring out how to engineer self-lacing sneakers to meet "Back to the Future's" fictional release day last year.

Nike made one pair of the self-lacing Nike Mag kicks for Michael J Fox - the actor who played Marty McFly in the film - which they are planning to auction to support his non-profit organisation for Parkinson's.

The potential of adaptive lacing for the athlete is huge, Hatfield said, adding that it would provide tailored-to-the-
moment custom fit.

"It is amazing to consider a shoe that senses what the body needs in real-time. That eliminates a multitude of distractions, including mental attrition, and thus truly benefits performance," Hatfield said.

"Could it take you even tighter than you'd normally go if it senses you really need extra snugness in a quick maneuver? That's where we're headed. In the future, product will come alive," he added.

HyperAdapt 1.0 is the first step into the future of adaptive performance. It's currently manual (i.e athlete controlled) but it makes feasible the once-fantastic concept of an automated, nearly symbiotic relationship between the foot and shoe.

It will be available only to members of Nike+ beginning Holiday 2016 in three colours.

The upcoming tweaks and new features in Google's next Android OS version, believed to be showcased at I/O 2016 as Android N, have started making the rounds on the Internet. We have seen a purported screenshot of Android N's new hamburger design in system settings. Now, a new leak again shows the redesigned system settings page.

Android Police has yet again sharedmock-up screenshots of the system settings of the Android N based on the real ones.
Preface

The screenshots purportedly show that a bar will appear at the top of system settings showing do not disturb status and will also allow to switch modes from a drop down. Another minor change in the AndroidN UI is the missing dividing line that separates each option.

A major addition seen in the purported Android N mock-up screenshots is the display of setting status for every option. If this comes out to be true, users will no longer need to enter each setting to check the status. For example, the Battery setting shows percentage of battery left and also a possible standby time. Also seen is the User tab showing the name of the account of each device that is signed-in.

Another screenshot shows the already seen shared hamburger button in Android N that points to a side navigation drawer that lists all Settings sections, making it easier to switch between them. Currently, users have to go back into main settings page before jumping to another Settings section.

It's worth mentioning that the spotted screenshots or the shared video claimed to be from Android N may be early version of the OS and we may see a lot of changes in the final build.

Google is likely to reveal its next mobile operating system, believed to be called as Android N initially, at the I/O conference. Google CEO Sundar Pichai had last month has announcedthe date and venue for the I/O 2016 which will be held in Mountain View, California on May 18 through May 20. Much like Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Android N can be expected to be launched later this year with the new Nexus hardware. Recently, Google possibly gave away Android N's revamped interface in an official video.

India’s largest telecom company Bharti Airtel said on Sunday that it has started delivering 4G mobile broadband speed of up to 135 megabits per second.
Bharti said data speeds of up to 135 Mbps have been delivered on commercially available mobile devices on Airtel’s 4G network in Kerala. “This is a game changer for mobile broadband in India. Airtel has pioneered 4G deployment in India and we are delighted to raise the innovation benchmark to deliver a world-class experience to our customers,” Bharti Airtel MD and CEO (India and South Asia) Gopal Vittal said in a statement.
With this, Airtel has joined a select group of global mobile operators to commercially deploy the technology that delivers ultra-fast mobile data speeds and enables better spectrum utilisation and efficiency, said the company. “Using the carrier aggregation technology and combining the capacities of TD LTE (2300 MHz spectrum band) and FD LTE (1800 MHz spectrum band), data speeds of up to 135 Mbps have been delivered on commercially available mobile devices on Airtel’s 4G network in Kerala,” said Airtel.

Nokia Networks has partnered Airtel in deploying the carrier aggregation technology.

At the heart of the Mi 5 we find the Snapdragon 820 processor powering the device. Xiaomi chose to use two different variants of the Snapdragon 820 depending on the configuration and price options. The lowest priced option with 32GB of storage comes with an MSM8996lite which is a lower-binned Snapdragon 820 whose Kryo cores reach up to 1.36GHz on the efficiency cluster and 1.8GHz on the performance cluster. Furthermore the 32GB version only supports LPDDR4 up to 1333MHz. The 64GB and 128GB options come with the full 1.59GHz/2.15GHz speed bins and 1866MHz memory.
Power efficiency of the new SoC was has been a big discussion topic revolving the Snapdragon 820 and I know a lot of readers are impatient on new information on the matter, so I took the opportunity to try to measure the power draw of the new Kryo cores on the Mi5. The values presented here are just estimates based on power measurements from the device’s input charge power so there’s likely some voltage converter inefficiency at play and more thorough measurements in the future may result in lower figures.

We do see some significant improvements for Qualcomm and the Snapdragon 820 represents a substantial reduction in power over the Snapdragon 810 and 808. At first glance though it seems Qualcomm isn’t able to beat HiSilicon’s Kirin 950 in terms of efficiency – although it looks like it will be able to display better efficiency than the Exynos 7420. A bit worrisome was the rather high 1 core power load but it’s still too early to determine if this is CPU-core related or rather power from another SoC block. Nevertheless it seems that the Xiaomi Mi5 and other Snapdragon 820 devices should be able show off concrete improvements over last year’s flagship phones.
On the GPU side we see some good improvements as well, although it seems the Snapdragon 820’s GPU is yet again oversized for smartphone form-factors as power figures are well above sustainable thermal envelope of phones such as the Mi5, so significant long-term throttling should be expected.

Continuing on with the rest of the MI 5’s specifications, we find a 5.15” 1080p IPS LCD display. I think Xiaomi did well in staying with a 1080p display as it will help with DDIC and display controller power to achieve better battery life for device. Xiaomi went one step further to improve power efficiency of the screen and disclosed that they’re using more backlight LEDs than in conventional designs – 16 instead of the usual 12-14. According to Xiaomi, this enables the Mi5 to reach up to 600nits of brightness as well as increasing overall backlight efficiency by 17%. While we still have to verify all of these claims, what I did notice is that the quality of the IPS panel that Xiaomi uses on the Mi5 is excellent. The display’s viewing angles are among one of the best I’ve seen on an LCD panel so it’ll definitely be interesting to see if Xiaomi was also able to provide accurate colour reproduction.

Further hardware specifications on the internals of the device include a switch to UFS-based NAND storage which promises to reach data-rates of up to 450MB/s – a figure that I wasn’t quite able to reach as quick testing shows the NAND speed reaching only 239MB/s read and 30.76MB/s writes (AndroBench 4.0, 256/4KB buffers, 1 thread). It’s possible that Xiaomi is quoting numbers without encryption and FDE on Android 6.0 is slowing down the maximum achievable speeds by the hardware.
Design-wise, this might be Xiaomi’s best device to date. The designers were able to adopt the Mi Note’s bevelled back sides to achieve excellent in-hand feel. To improve on the Mi Note's design which only curved half-way through the side of the device, the Mi5 now also curves the metal frame to try to give a more continuous feel between the metal and the glass/ceramic. Although the device sports a 5.15” screen, thanks to the design it feels more like a 4.7” or smaller device. The in-hand feel is reminiscent of the Galaxy S7 and I’m definitely happy to see that companies this year focused on improving their ergonomics. The only area where I wish Xiaomi had improved a bit more was on the front edges of the device as the lack of 2.5D glass does accentuate the rather sharp feel of the metal frame on the front.


I mentioned glass/ceramic earlier, and yes, there is a distinction between glass and ceramic as the MI 5 will come in three variants with two options for the back material. The cheaper 32 and 64GB variants will come with a more traditional glass back, while the 128GB variant comes with a more premium ceramic back cover. Advantages of the ceramic version will be that it'll be much more scratch resistant due to the hardness of the ceramic. One thing that wasn't mentioned during the presentation, but does make a large difference in the device's rather light baseline weight of 129g is that the ceramic back adds in 10g more which was definitely noticeable when holding both variants of the phone.The right side of the device sports a power button with a volume rocker above it. We find a SIM tray on the upper left side of the phone. At the top we see a IR blaster, microphone hole and the 3.5mm headphone jack. The bottom features a USB-C connector which is flanked by 4 speaker holes on each side, although similarly to Huawei’s devices only  the right side contains a speaker as the opposing speaker grill serves only as a symmetrical design feature and housing for the main microphone.
The MI 5 is Xiaomi's first smartphone with a physical home button. Primary reason for this is the new inclusion of a fingerprint sensor whose accuracy I found to be quite high. I was also very impressed with the implementation of the device wakeup feature: If you wake the device via the home button then it will immediately unlock the device without showing the lock-screen, not requiring a second gesture or trial & error with reading the fingerprint after the initial press. When the device is unlocked the fingerprint sensor also acts as a capacitive button so you never actually have to press the button during normal usage beyond initially waking the device up, effectively enabling full capacitive button navigation for the Mi5.

Freedom 251 was officially launched. The themes of Digital India, Skill India, and Make in India were given a lot of importance at the launch event, as the potential use cases of the phone to empower citizens in rural and semi-urban areas were highlighted.

The company did not share too many details, but stated the although the chipset will be imported from Taiwan at present, the rest of Freedom 251 would be made in India; the goal is to make up to 75 percent of the hardware in India by the end of one year, and to raise this to 100 percent over time, said Ringing Bells President Ashok Chadha. To accomplish this, the company is looking at investing in two manufacturing plants - in Noida and Uttaranchal - immediately as a pilot project at an estimated cost of Rs. 500 crore, with a targeted capacity of 5 lakh units each per month, with a goal of having five manufacturing centres in total over time, Chadha added
He also confirmed that there is no government subsidy for the phone, and nor is there any involvement from the government, beyond a long time friendship with MP Murli Manohar Joshi, who provided "vision and guidance" for the Freedom 251 project.
The eventual goal, according to the company, is to sell over 1 crore units per month. At the launch, Chadha also confirmed that if the number of orders crosses 2.5 lakhs, the company will have to stop taking further orders.

The Ringing Bells Freedom 251 runs on Android 5.1, with a 4-inch display, a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage (expandable to 32GB). The phone, which can be booked online until Saturday, is priced at an amazingly low Rs. 251, but you may have to wait a few months to actually get the phone, as units may be delivered as late as June 30.
